Monday 5th May - Sunday 11th May

On Monday dawn broke bright and early which is a bad habit it has around here; some time later the 208th broke surface not quite so brightly and moved down to the Squadron via normal same-every-day Met Briefing to start a big week's air to ground firing under the auspices of the McCraig. The programme got under way with T11 trips for the plebs and Hunter Cine for the elite. On one of the first line shoots Moose showed the way with a solid 38%.

The real business of the day however took place in the evening when most of us met in the bar in assorted dress ranging from DJs through Mess Kit to sweltering Interim to have a few strengtheners before going to see Lita Rosa perform in a CSE show at the camp cinema. Judging by the bulging eyes most people approved. After the show we returned to the bar which was being kept open by the Station Commander who seemed interested in the state of Moose's one eye.

Tuesday and Wednesday were routing days with an increasing amount of Air to Ground. Graham climbed the first step to the pedestal on which he stands by virtue of his 49% average. Moose had taken over from Dad 2X Gregg as RSO at Larnaca Range on Wednesday and made a very efficient showing despite being told by an Airborne Abdul that EOKA were setting up a Bren Gun 100 yds from his hut. We hear that on the way to the range one morning his ammunition (all six of it) fell overboard during his demonstration of 'What I would do if ambushed.'

On Thursday morning many scores were in the 30-40 band and Pete Botters who was plastering the target well was heard to concede that there might be something in this gun firing lark after all but made reservation when he heard about Air to Air next week. There were several stoppages and it became normal to fire with outers as they evidently went either side of the target.

John McCallum arrived back a mere ten days late from two weeks leave. He said he had dysentery - if he hadn't then it was a hell of a leave as he looked worn out. Quite a few people swam in the afternoon. Wee Tim now takes a polo ball down so instead of making like senile walruses (or is it walri?) we have to thrash around after the beastly thing. In the evening a noise developed in the bar during which the piano was introduced to Fire Extinguisher Fluid.

On Friday the sun beat down with new vigour which did not deter Don Brimms from notching up a 70% which ought to cost him a few drinks, perhaps he and the Boss could throw a 'Highest and Lowest' party? John Barwell returned from a night in Ankara with tales of a Black Market in Scotch and with a septic foot.
