Thursday March 20th - Sunday March 23rd 1958

Almost two hours after leaving Tangmere the aircraft arrived without incident at Istres and immediately on alighting it was realised that the cold shores of the United Kingdom had been left behind for a warm breeze and shining sun promised well. Lunch at Istres consisted of an unmanageable Jerusalem artichoke, baked beans and sausage, steak and chips and an orange - of course there was wine but 'Sir' said not to touch.

John Hext had ear trouble on the descent at Istres and over it was decided that he should change places with William Thomas. As John Abdul ate his lunch in leisurely fashion so the B'heaverly started its four motors and prepared to move away, this resulted in a chase but John was all right and made Luqa that evening.

The second leg for the Hunters was to Luqa and this time over a fairly considerable amount of oggin with only Corsica and Sicily to break the monotony and provide only one diversion between them. After the first hour a wee voice in the first flight piped up that it had transfer failure, the voice was identified as a two-octave-higher-than-normal-type Ray - however the trouble righted itself and nothing further happened apart from the violent twitches afforded by the approach to Luqa. Another radio snag caused the second section to arrive, once more, in two halves.

Outings to Valetta were planned for the evening and most people managed to look around and see the place - Ian Craig didn't see quite as much as the others owing to some genial hospitality, some whisky and having to be carried.

At ten on Friday morning the fifteen aircraft left Luqa in four sections at fifteen minute intervals for the for the long hop over interminable Mediterranean again to Nicosia. Nothing happened on the last leg and after two hours flying all aircraft landed in hot sunshine at  Nicosia to be met by Tom Sheppard and Jack Gregg - Advance Party and Resident respectively. After a quick lunch briefings started and comprised a talk by Admin, Air Traffic, Sector and Security representatives - by the time they were over most people were saturated and more than a few fast asleep.

In the evening there was a film show, a regular Friday night feature, and most people attended, some of the ex-Biggin Hill contingent dressed in Dinner Jacket or Interim Mess Kit.
