….. and Back to Sunny Sharjah!

First trip on the Squadron after a spell of UK leave and what happens - no nosewheel! Ah, well! You can't win them all, even so she does quite well on two wheels. The aircraft here, incidentally, is sporting our newly acquired rocket pods. A great weapon after the 3" drainpipe!

Detachment to No 8

On an exchange basis I was attached to 8 Squadron at Khormaksar. These 'operational' boys gave me a great time. Here my first trip was as No 15 in a Diamond 16 flypast to bid farewell to Sir Richard Turnbull, political OC for Aden. We didn't often get experience of large formations and it was therefore an interesting experience and very hard work. The accompanying shot is of the same formation taken from the side. Doesn't give much away does it !?!

The Last of the Big Formations

And for my second trip with Strike Wing I was put in this 55-Ship balbo. 208 came down for this in order to provide the requisite number of Hunters. These in turn followed the Navy's Buccaneers and Sea Vixens; the latter belonging to Victorious and Hermes. The object of the exercise appeared to be to remind the locals 'just what a big stick Daddy has!'

Whether we succeeded or not I don't know, but I for one was terrified!
