Flt Lt Harry Tapner (2)

…... troubled times. Needless to say, he fulfilled his ambition and became a Spitfire pilot, gaining the rank of Flight Lieutenant.

It was during the early years of his RAF service, while home in Bournemouth on leave, that he met his future wife, Marjorie, at a dance at the local Church hall. They kept in touch during the war years, finally marrying on 12th June 1948. Harry was demobbed from the RAF in 1947 and went to work for BOAC in London for a short while before taking up an appointment as travel clerk with the wonderfully named Morrison Pollexfen & Blair Limited at the end of 1949. In 1952 he became travel manager and commenced the air cargo activities of the company, which led to him becoming an Assistant Director in 1956. The company moved to new premises at London Airport in 1961 and following the subsequent growth of MPB Ltd a subsidiary Company, Morison Group Air Ltd, was formed in 1966 with Harry as a Director. He was appointed Managing Director the following year. He remained as Executive Director when the company was taken over by Furness Withey Group and renamed Brantford International Ltd in the early 1970s.

Following their marriage, Harry and Marjorie moved to East Finchley in North London to live with Marjorie’s parents in the house in which Marjorie was born. Harry and Marjorie’s daughter, Sue, was born in 1953 and Ian arrived in 1966. Harry spent nine years driving to work at Heathrow, leaving home in Finchley early in the morning and not arriving home until late in the evening. As Managing Director, Harry was entitled to a company car, which was quite unusual back in the 1960s, and he insisted on this being garaged. So, every morning he would take the dog and go and collect his car from a lock-up garage about a 15 minute walk away – how times have changed!

It wasn’t until 1970 when Sue had left school and Ian was only 4 years old, so hadn’t started school that the family moved to West Drayton, which made Harry’s journey to work a lot easier.
