Gulf War Anniversary 05

On 17 March 1991, the twelve Buccaneers flew back non-stop to Lossiemouth, air-to-air refuelling three times during the 4,000 mile journey home, where they arrived on a typical murky day. Air Marshal Sir Michael Stear, who had done so much to promote the Buccaneer's capability, flew to join the families for the very warm, emotional and well-deserved reception for a job well done. The final word on the Squadron's involvement in the Gulf War should be left to the Squadron Commander:

'Whilst I did not believe that there were any particular heroic achievements by our people, I believe they made one of the most significant contributions to the RAF's participation in DESERT STORM. I was, therefore, very disappointed when our contributions were largely ignored when the post-war decorations were handed out.’

That was somewhat remedied a few years after the war when I met General Sir Peter de la Billiere at Bentley Priory. I had not previously met him, so I introduced myself as 'the Commander of the oldest front-line aircraft unit under your command in 1991.' His response was:

'Young man (I knew I was going to like him!), your aircraft saved the RAF's reputation.' And, I have Sir Peter's permission to use that quote. The Buccaneer had more than justified its place in the history books as a 'warbird'.

There was some dismay at the lack of decorations awarded to the Squadron after its outstanding contribution. Squadron Leader Browne of 12 Squadron, and the Pave Spike leader, was awarded the DFC but there was little recognition for others. This was partly rectified in the 1992 New Year's Honours List when it was announced that Wing Commander Cope had been awarded a richly deserved AFC for his period in command of the Squadron, which included his service in the Gulf War.
