WWII 1939 - 1941 (12)

…... for Amphiklia at once. And thirdly that the Hurricanes should leave for Elevsis in the South to operate from there attached to 80 Squadron and use Amphiklia as a refuelling base. Thus tactical reconnaissances were commenced in the area to the North of Larissa. Considerable enemy activity was seen moving in a Southerly direction however the aircraft were unable to refuel at Amphiklia as it was under strong attack.

The enemy continued to push south, and attacked Elevsis from the air providing additional hazards for the pilots on their return from recce sorties. With the situation becoming more fraught the Amphiklia detachment was ordered to return, the three Lysanders at Hassani were sent to Argos and the Squadron received orders to be ready to leave Athens at four hours notice. Four and a half hours later the Squadron left by rail for Corinth. Emergency instructions arrived requesting two reconnaissance flights in the area of Evvoia Island on the East and the Agrinion-Arta road on the west coast. After this the detached flight and 80 Squadron moved to Argos. With considerable enemy movement evident the remaining Lysanders flew to Crete while the RAF were preparing for the evacuation of Greece.

Following a series of reconnaissance flights, twenty four Me 110s visited the northern landing ground at Argos, where most of the aircraft were concentrated in the olive orchard adjoining the landing ground, and carried out a continuous and devastating attack for forty minutes. With the exception of a Proctor all aircraft were destroyed. The Messerschmitts carried out a series of low front gun attacks and having dispensed with the aircraft on the ground, most of which were blazing and belching smoke, turned their attention to the slit trenches using both front and rear guns and intermittently throwing out anti-personnel bombs. Incredibly, however, there were no casualties amongst the 208 Squadron personnel.
