Centenary Celebrations 07

Historical Presentation

Another highlight of the morning’s programme was an historical presentation given by Colin Buxton to Association members and the friends and families of the graduating officers. Colin had spent a considerable time researching the WWI period of the Squadron’s history and treated his audience to an in-depth discussion of the chronology of the Squadron’s early years, the nature of operations in WWI, the culture of ‘Naval 8’ and the personalities involved. Much of Colin’s exceptional research has been included in this Website in the ‘Roll of Honour’ for those who flew and fought on the Squadron in the Great War.

Graduation Lunch

It was then time for the Graduation Lunch for the members of Tactical Weapons Course No 84 in the Officers’ Mess. In full circle from its formation, the Squadrons final graduates were both Naval officers: Lieutenant Nicholas Baker and Lieutenant Adam Vines. It was also entirely fitting, therefore that the Reviewing Officer was Rear Admiral Keith Blount OBE, the Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Aviation, Amphibious Capability & Carriers).

The graduates and their families were joined in the Officers Mess by Squadron and Station staff, Association members and Air Commodore David Bentley, the Director of Flying Training for the Royal Air Force. He also acknowledged 208 Squadron’s illustrious history and his sadness at its imminent disbandment.
