2023 Reunion Lunch

Following its travels to the Midlands in the previous year, the Reunion of the Naval Eight / 208 Squadron Association returned to the RAF Club on Saturday 21 October 2023. Despite torrential rain, floods and a 100,000-strong protest march in Piccadilly, some 17 members and their guests attended a sumptuous lunch served by the ever-attentive Club staff in the President's room. Sadly, one of the casualties of the execrable weather was Ben Laite, whose train had been cancelled due to flooding. His grace was therefore read by Eugene Moriarty.

Following a starter of soy cured salmon with radish salad 2023 Reunion Menu.pdfand wasabi mayonnaise served on crispy rice noodles, the guests enjoyed a main course of coq au vin with lardons, mushroom and baby onions, carrots and broccoli. This was followed by apple, plum and frangipane tart with crème anglaise before coffee and petits fours were served.

The Chairman proposed two Loyal Toast on this occasion, the first to His Majesty The King, followed by a second to His Majesty King Philippe, The King of the Belgians to mark the welcome attendance of the Association's Belgian guest, Sebastien Colmant.

Following the toasts, the Chairman presented apologies from Ben Laite and Dave Southwood, who had unfortunately been prevented from attending at short notice. He hoped that they, and everyone else, would be able to attend the 2024 Reunion, which would be held in the same format as this year's as a Lunch at the RAF Club on Saturday 26 October 2024.

He then updated everyone on the status of the Association. There were some 272 members in full contact out of a total membership of 375. He urged everyone to keep the Association informed of any changes of address so that it could remain in touch with as many members as possible. The Association's bank account was healthy, with more than sufficient to cover the small excess in the cost of the Reunion Lunch above the £60 that had been charged for each member and their guests. Because a generous benefactor had stepped forward to pay for the printing and postage of the Newsletter, the Association had very few additional expenses, although donations would always be gratefully received.
