The Sky’s The Limit (7)

My progression in flying had begun with a single seater Tiger Moth, progressed through a range of military aircraft to piston engine and then turbo-prop small/medium airliners. The time in Singapore Airlines had taken me into the latest age of long-range jet airliners from Boeing 707 and Boeing 737 through to the large Boeing 747 aircraft. In all the time I had flown, I had never been involved in an aircraft crash or any serious incident, leading to loss of life. I attribute this mainly to my excellent RAF training, which enabled me to develop the skills to recognise and recover from difficult and unforeseen problems.


Looking back on my flying career, the greatest disadvantage of piloting long distance trans-oceanic routes were the frequent and long absences from home. Sometimes up to two weeks at a time. Other than that, I have fond memories of my years with the airline and consider that I for fortunate to have worked for such a fine organisation and blessed to have been able to practice a profession I enjoyed. I gained immense satisfaction from my daily work to the point where I regarded it as one of my pleasures. The years flew by rapidly and 1986 saw the end of a career I had loved. I was a young fit 60-year-old and felt lucky as I entered retirement, in Australia, the country of our choice, to be with family and friends.
