The Radfan Operation (3)

Mine Clearing

It did not take the locals very long to realise that placing mines on the tracks we used regularly was an effective way of being a real pain in the backside. You can see the track on the left of the photo.

Visit by UK Recce Party

We did not base 2 FRA at Thumeir as we were operating well to the East. We did however set up an administrative base (B Echelon) at the Northern end of the airstrip. Prior to the mass arrival of the Brits we had a number of visits and various test flights which required us to secure the area and check for mines. I think this was a Pembroke.

Dhala Road

Once you left the hill/wadi country South of Thumeir you would often hit patches of very fine and very deep sand that was almost like talcum powder.

Addoo Position

This was taken from the Northern end of Thumeir soon after we arrived from Dhala. We sent a company to secure the hills and set up a forward position to protect our Eastern flank when they came under fire. The RHA were quickly into action to bring gunfire down on the enemy position. I did not use my camera very much from then on.
