History - Inter-War (7)

During the three years in which Squadron Leader Moore was in command the Squadron carried out routine training, paid visits to Baghdad and Khartoum. In June 1932 it won the Middle East Command Bombing Cup and reached a new high in active Army Co-operation with 1161 hours. One of the reasons for this was that 14 Squadron had changed their role from Army Co-operation to light bomber leaving 208 as the only remaining Army Co-operation Squadron. The following year in a great fit of exuberance the Squadron again won the Command Bombing Cup together with the HQ Musketry and Pistol Cups and Armament General Proficiency Cup. These trophies were presented on a full parade by Air Vice Marshal C L N Newall CB, CMG CBE MA (who later went on to become Chief of the Air Staff) and it was on this happy note that Squadron Leader Moore left 208.  In an extract from the report on training, Egypt Command, the GOC British Troops in Egypt said: “As in previous years I cannot thank Squadron Leader Moore OBE and the

officers of 208 (AC) Squadron RAF, sufficiently for the manner in which they have co-operated with myself, my staff, formations and units in the command. No trouble has been too much for them, and I would like to take this occasion on the relinquishment by Sqn Ldr Moore of the command of his Squadron to mention my appreciation of the work of both himself and all ranks of 208 (AC) Squadron RAF” At the end of the month the Squadron was taken over by Squadron Leader John Whitworth Jones ex commanding officer of 13(AC) Squadron.

The Squadron Crest and Motto which had been approved by the officers of the Squadron in July 1930 was adapted and improved in subsequent years and was finally standardised as shown in the photograph. It consisted of a winged eye looking from an azure sky, the motto being Vigilant. This crest was painted on the fin of all Squadron aircraft. This was the forerunner of the current Squadron Crest below:
