To maintain the Squadron spirit, it was imperative to encourage as many former members of the Squadron as possible to attend future reunions. Many ex-members had expressed difficulty in travelling to London and a desire, therefore, to meet elsewhere. The Committee had therefore investigated the Association’s ‘Centre of Gravity’ which, not surprisingly, was in the Midlands. He thanked Nigel Huckins for his expert work in determining the Centre of Gravity, and the Committee for researching potential alternative venues for next year’s Reunion. Again, he stressed the importance of encouraging as many former colleagues as possible to attend.

To illustrate the enduring Squadron spirit, the President asked Neil Meadows to read a chapter of Sid Jefford’s memoirs, which would shortly be published under the title of ‘Two/Six’. The anecdote was entitled: ‘A Very Dodgy Operation’.

The Chairman elaborated further on the President’s comments about an alternative venue for the 2019 Reunion. After much consideration by the Committee, this would be at a Manor House-style hotel near Coleshill, Birmingham on Saturday 19 October 2019. More details would be published in the 2019 Newsletter, Air Mail, RAF News, the British Legion News and, of course, the Association Website. This would be done following a ‘recce’ of the hotel by members of the Committee to ensure that it was an appropriate venue for the Reunion, notwithstanding its excellent online reviews.

The proposed venue was close to the Birmingham NEC, the Cosford Air Museum and several good golf courses, so it promised an engaging and entertaining weekend for those attending the Reunion. The Chairman also urged everyone to encourage all former colleagues to attend.

Following a toast to the Naval Eight / 208 Squadron Association, the repaired to the Cowdray Lounge for more anecdotes and reminiscences.
