The 6-Day Weekend (1)

Here below is Doug Johns’ illustrated account of his and Hugh Fields’ six day 'jolly' (Nav Exercise!) to Nairobi. This was in a time when on occasions that the Squadron emigrated to another Base, the pilots usually had socks, pants, etc. wedged behind the gunsight en-route. Pressure suits, panniers and all the paraphernalia of a modern fighter was for the future!

1.   We start with 'drop' tanks fitted, and head east for Habbaniya, Sharjah; west for Malta - south, Nairobi?!

2.   Airborne for Khartoum via Wadi Halfa. My 'ventral' failed to feed, and, as was the understanding at the time, I continued on one engine, landing on one, as 'cold-soak' would almost certainly have made restarting difficult.

3.   Vent cleared and refueled, southbound at 30,000 for Khartoum, night stop! A hot night and great thirst, failing to realise that a large container of cool water was outside the room.

4.   Airborne for Juba, but, informed they had a large Cb directly over field. Not wishing to return to Khartoum, searched map for a 'strip' close to our position, and discovered Malakal. Called them on common 'approach' frequency, whether they had jet fuel and the length of 'strip'. All favourable, so we dropped in for a splendid lunch with the four Europeans at the Sudan Railway Hotel, while, a local Sudanese 'team' topped up the tanks with 4 gallon cans thro' a chamois.

5.   A closer look at the a/c, note, smaller intakes, non clear view canopy. We still used leather helmets, goggles and sunglasses and still had to develop the stronger neck muscles required for the 'bonedome'. A very comfortable, go anywhere mode of transport! Juba clear, we taxyed into the long elephant grass covering part of the runway and got airborne - fortunately without setting it on fire. Low on oxygen, so low level to Juba. A very pleasant night-stop at a local Hotel, and a leisurely departure.

6.    No oxygen available at Juba, keeps us where we are perfectly happy, at low level to Entebbe. Here, we were met by the Airport Manager and his wife, and invited to dinner and a conducted tour. A very pleasant night stop close to Lake Victoria and associated wildlife!
