A Flying Camel

In July 2011 the Association received the photographs and notes below from Colonel Russ Turner, describing his Flying Camel in 208 Squadron markings. They are published here with sincere thanks to the Colonel.

I have just completed and am now test flying a full size replica of a Sopwith F.1 Camel, marked as ship D1845, ”C”, and assigned to 208 Squadron late 1918. It has already been and is scheduled to be featured in some aircraft magazines.

You and your Association Members will recognize the distinct squadron markings of 208 Squadron in 1918. The aircraft represented, D1845, actually served as aircraft "C" with 208 Squadron during this time. Sharper eyes will pick out the Ruston Proctor decals, as the original aircraft was made by the Lincolnshire firm.

While many newer materials were used in construction for flying safety reasons, the cockpit is as original with many original instruments and an original (working!) Aldis gunsight. Some concessions to modern airports were made such as a tailwheel instead of a skid.
