A History of 208 Squadron’ was the first comprehensive history of 208 Squadron ever written. Originally intended as a private publication for Squadron members, the book was published in limited numbers in paperback format, and is occasionally available on the secondary market.

It includes a summary of ‘Naval Eight’ to make the history complete for the first 50 years of the Squadron from its formation in the First World War to its 50th Anniversary at Muharraq in Bahrain. The story is told in an engaging narrative format by Douglas Marr then a Flight Lieutenant serving on the Squadron and flying the Hunter FGA9. The task to compile the history was given Douglas as a secondary duty by the then Squadron Commander, Squadron Leader Tony Chaplin. Most of the work was done in Douglas’s spare time and considerable credit goes to him for an excellent job.

It provides, in as much detail as was possible at the time, a chronological outline of events drawn from the Squadron’s Operational Records Books and Diaries, which are particularly rich during the Second World War period.

Although copies of the book are hard to come by, with Douglas Marr’s gracious permission, it forms the basis of the Squadron History section of this Website, and is therefore available for everyone to read.
